Update

Since Skogarfoss, we have been busy finishing our circumnavigation of Iceland, checking our Reykjavik and making our way to the Blue Lagoon.

After Skogarfoss, we checked out Gettifoss (lots of fosses) which was pretty impressive - two separate drops making up the falls. The cafe there served a bottomless bowl of lamb soup and I don't think they broke even on Ken and James. Then to Geysir. Geysir itself has stopped erupting except duuring earthquakes but nearby, another hot boiling pool erupted every five minutes or so. Interesting, but we thought that the bubbling mudpots at Hverir left Geysir in the dust.

Then finally to Thingvellir and the rift valley separating the two tectonic plates that are moving apart and making Iceland bigger. That really is an amazing thing and you can see the rough ridges that are the edge of the North American plate running for kilometers.

Finally to Reykjavik, where we arrived at about 7 pm. We had the obligatory pre-dinner scotch and went for dinner at Icelandic FIsh and Chips - a kind of self-serve/semi serve place. I opted for veggie offerings, Ken had haddock and James and Sara had cod.

Today was spent in Reykjavik which was okay but we all felt that one day was more than enough. We went to the top of a building called The Pearl, which is built on geothermically heated hot water tanks that service the city, including providing under-sidewalk heating in winter to prevent snow accumulation. A whole city that doesn't have to shovel sidewalks. Then on to Hallgrimskirkja church where we went up the tower for more views.

Then to Hofdi house where the Reagan-Gorbachev summit was held. Really interesting photos from that summit. Feeling all political, we decided to go to the hot dog stand where Bill Clinton went for a hot dog. Really great!!!

Feeling bored, we went to the new Opera House, finished in 2011 with money that they got God knows where. Probably from the Germans. Anyway, built to a whole ice and lava motif, the outside looks like ice cubes and the inside dark gray concrete walls.

After that a quick look at a local mall so Ken could buy a belt (forgotten in Toronto) and we decide we'd had enough of Reykjavik and headed to the Blue Lagoon where the hotel is great and, after an excessive dinner (photos to come) we spend 90 minutes in the private part of the lagoon only open to hotel guests.

The lava field comes right up to the back door of our room. The four of us are sitting in bathing suits and robes on the back deck, beside the lava field and watching a sun low in the sky but of course not set. And the scotch is out. Spa treatments tomorrow!
